Much ado about nothing. Plenty students return home at the end of their degree, a lot more also are returning as scheduled and some will extend. It's the usual course of events.
Exactly. It's news at all.
Probably slightly higher than other years due to some students wanting to finish their degree in a country where they have in person study rather than the online model Australia has been using since covid.
The real issue is little or no new students arriving from overseas.
No students at all coming from overseas. Normally would be tens of thousands arriving every year.
The surge in numbers is also because of Chinese New year which most students go home for.
News.com is the most click bait full of crap site ever.
Maybe Mr Xi order them to go home for good.
Both NSW and Victoria which host the largest share of international students have been worst hit by the exodus. Chinese students took first place followed by Indian, the second largest source of international students to Australia. The latest government figures showed 60,394 students departed NSW and 58,824 left Victoria, resulting in an overwhelming loss of revenue and costing hundreds of jobs. In the meantime, nearly 164,000 of Australia's 542,106 student visa holders were stuck outside the country on 10 January 2021 as per the latest figures revealed by the Federal Department of Education, Skills and Employment.
Many students that could have been working in the shops are not here and more Indian girls starting to appear in light of their second place status of foreign students.
Yeah I have to say, it's really bad now from a punting perspective. No way to dress it up, it's just bad. No arrivals, no new talent. Even walking around the city, there's so much less eye candy to look at now. Fark I hate this virus!
Just hoping the virus ends and the influx hits aus.. fingers crossed
with vaccines coming out hopefully borders open again towards the second half of 2021
The bad AUS-CHINA relations certainly don't help the situation, that's for sure!
Maybe we get more Indian and Japanese since Scomo is friends with them.
Yes I heard on the news that China had warned students to reconsider travel to Australia for study. Australia's educational institutions are the major beneficiaries of international students studying in Australia. International education contributed $37.6 billion to the Australian economy last financial year (2019), which was a $5 billion increase. Beyond tuition fees, international students go out to cafes, restaurants and the movies. They pay rent and bills, buy food and use public transport. They travel around Australia and contribute to the tourist industry. Certainly they provide many financial benefits to our economy.
Japan does not seem to be a big contributor to university enrollments. Most of the students I came across in my career went to TAFE or private colleges.
2019 enrolments are recorded as:
China: 203,295 international students
India: 109,736 international students
Nepal: 51,377 international students
Brazil: 25,604 international students
Vietnam: 24,782 international students
Malaysia: 23,854 international students
Korea, Republic of (South): 20,152 international students

As far as punting and WLs go these figures for university students are largely irrelevant.
Very, very few real international university students work as WLs. They exist, but they are very rare.

I've noticed that there does not seem to be as much change or rotation in the ML's as there used to be. I suspect that's because there is not the normal influx of new talent. What I have also observed is with the supply down the price of extras being offered has edged up a little. Not the standard $50 NHJ, but the other extras offered by more open minded girls.
