Portugal cancelled their fireworks this year because of worries about terrorism attacks.

They were going to give the $5 million dollars they saved not spending on fireworks to the poor, but they decided that was the wrong philosophical approach and not in keeping with the spirit of the occasion.

So they piled up the cash in the public square and burnt it instead, while the poor stood around and warmed their hands on the fire.

This sounds like a good plan next year for Martin Place too. It will certainly save Sydney, if not the cash, at least from another repetitive, transient, infantilising and crushingly dull excess. :bad_smile: :D

Meanwhile the TV networks can save their money and just replay last year, or the year before, or...take your pick.
