Referrals

Looking at my profile I notice that down the bottom it has a section titled "Referrals".

While I have a 0 there (and most contributors based on a random selection I just did also have 0 referrals), I notice that others have 1 or more.

I am wondering, are these referrals a good or a bad thing and also, how/who allocates them?

What sort of reward to referrees get? I've been lurking for a while and just put one of my fave posters as my referrer.
